Chapter 1

Zoe. Your name is Zoe Kildare now.

Zoe mentally cautioned herself while she paced back and forth, her agitation only increasing as she stopped to check her watch. Where was she? Rusty should have been here by now. Zoe's mind raced with a number of gruesome possibilities. What if she'd been found out? What if she'd led Rusty straight into harm's way?

The door burst open and she barely managed to suppress her surprised cry of fright. She sagged with relief when her college friend Rusty Kelly hurried through carrying a stack of folders and loose papers.

Rusty dropped the load onto the coffee table and pulled Zoe into a fierce hug. The two women held on to each other for a long moment before Rusty finally pulled away, her gaze sweeping up and down Zoe as if assessing her condition.

"Are you okay?" Rusty asked anxiously.

Zoe swallowed and nodded though tears pricked her eyelids.

Rusty gave her another bone-crushing hug, and Zoe held on to her friend just as tightly. Then Rusty guided her to the nearby couch and urged her down, sitting diagonal to her and gathering her hands in her firm grip.

"Did anyone follow you? Did you see anything out of the ordinary or get a sense that anyone was watching you?" Rusty asked urgently.

Zoe shook her head. "No, I don't think so. I was careful. I did everything you told me. I made it appear as though I was heading west to California."

Rusty nodded approvingly. "That's good, but we can't afford to waste any time nor can we ever adopt a false sense of security. You went to college here and it's a city you're familiar with, so it stands to reason this is a logical place you'd go."

"I can't stay here," Zoe choked out.

"No, you can't," Rusty said calmly. "I need you to answer some questions for me, Stel-I mean Zoe. Damn it. We can't afford to slip. You've got to be aware and on your toes at all times. You cannot react to your real name. You can't flinch, show any awareness. You have to act as though you assume whoever is using it is calling someone else's name. And you absolutely have to be tuned in to your alias and behave as if it's the name you were born with."

Zoe nodded, clasping Rusty's hands more fiercely. Her heart felt as though it were going to beat right out of her chest. Not a minute had passed since overhearing Sebastian's-or whoever the hell he was-conversation six days ago that fear hadn't been a living, breathing constant for her. Her entire life had been upended the day she'd been crushed and had learned what a gullible, na•ve fool she'd been. Had always been.

"Zoe is a name I'm intimately familiar with," she admitted, lowering her eyes in embarrassment. "When I was a child, I felt so isolated . . . so alone that I made up an imaginary friend. Zoe. Zoe Kildare. I had no other friends. I was a stranger in my own home. My father barely acknowledged my presence."

She broke off, tears threatening once more. Damn it. She'd shed no more tears over her father or a bastard like Sebastian. She'd never mattered to anyone in her life, so why should she have believed for a moment that she would matter to the man who became her lover? A man whom she'd overheard laughing and saying what a chore it was to have to fuck a loser like her. Just the memory had her cringing with humiliation.

"Oh honey," Rusty said, her own eyes going bright with tears.

Zoe shook her head, firming her lips. "They aren't worth your tears or mine. Now, what questions did you have for me?"

Rusty sighed but returned to the matter at hand. "Did you ever at any time mention me, my name, anything about me, to Sebastian, your father or anyone? Think hard, Zoe. This is important."

Zoe frowned as she thought back. But no. She hadn't wanted to risk Rusty in any way-Rusty was her first and only true friend. The only person in her entire life who was real and loyal. She shook her head in response to the question.

"Are you one hundred percent certain?" Rusty persisted.

"I wasn't exactly on speaking terms with my father," Zoe said bitterly. "And when I was with Sebastian we didn't talk about my life outside of our 'relationship.' I was too worried he would find out about me . . . who I was . . . and that he'd hate me, never knowing he knew all along."

Rusty looked relieved and then smiled, her eyes lighting up with triumph. "I don't want you to worry. I have the perfect plan."

Zoe looked at her in confusion, but Rusty went over and gathered the stack of folders she'd carried in with her. She began placing items in front of a stunned Zoe.

"First, here's your driver's license. You're from Chicago, by the way. Here's your birth certificate, passport and Social Security card. Oh, and credit cards with an already well-established credit history. You have a penchant for books and wine, judging by the purchases. And clothes. I made you a total clothes and shoe whore. You even have Facebook and Twitter accounts that date back seven years-do you have any idea how long it took me to make up and post inane details of your life as well as establish fake friends for you? Oh, and you also have a solid purchase history with Amazon, including a Kindle and plenty of e-books. You're a devoted fan of cookbooks, romance and science fiction."

Zoe looked at her in utter bewilderment. Then she latched on to one of the last things Rusty said. "Cookbooks?" She broke into hysterical laughter. "I can't even boil water!"

Rusty shrugged. "Details. Not like you'll have to prove your culinary prowess, and it was all I could come up with on such short notice."

Zoe's jaw gaped in awe. "Rusty, how on earth did you accomplish all this? Isn't this . . . illegal?"

Rusty didn't look overly concerned. "What can I say? I have mad tech and hacking skills. I impressed even myself this time."

"I have no idea what to say. This is . . ."

Rusty gave her a cheeky grin. "Brilliant? Genius?" She made a show of blowing on her nails, a devilish gleam in her eyes. "Oh, and by the way, after you got your BA, you also graduated with an MBA from DePaul University. I didn't want any similarities to your past reality."

"I think I'm kind of afraid of you right now," Zoe said, though some of the panic that had been ever present since hearing of her intended fate from her scumbag ex-lover eased, and for the first time she began to feel . . . hope.

Rusty rolled her eyes. "It's just as well you can't tell anyone what I've done because it's not like my overbearing brothers would ever believe I was more tech savvy than my geek-god brother, Donovan. Not to mention a certain asshole sheriff who's the bane of my existence and hasn't missed any opportunity to demean and insult me over the years but then inexplicably decided to give me the most delicious kiss of my life. Not that there've been that many."

Zoe winced in sympathy. She was the only person Rusty had confided in about her love/hate relationship with Sean Cameron, the sheriff of the county she lived in.

"Apparently we both suck when it comes to men," she said lamely.

"No, sister. We don't suck. They do," Rusty said emphatically.

"I'll drink to that," she muttered.

Rusty leaned forward and squeezed her hands, sympathy brimming in her eyes. "He's an asshole, Zoe. And not worth your time or regret. You did nothing wrong. He played you. That's on him. Not you."

"Doesn't make me any less stupid," Zoe muttered.

"Well, join the crowd. I should have knocked Sean's teeth out when he pulled that stunt and especially since he apologized and said it never should have happened. But noooo. I stood there like a moron. God, I'm mortified to this day and avoid him at all costs."

"So you said you had the perfect plan," Zoe said, purposely turning the subject away from what was clearly a painful, embarrassing memory for Rusty.

Rusty's eyes lit up as she smiled. "I have the perfect plan. You're going to come home with me and stay for a while. You know. A friend I met at a conference while in college and kept in touch with. Marlene and Frank will love you and take you in just like family."

Zoe's expression became troubled. "That's not a good idea, Rusty. I don't want you or your family exposed to any danger. You've already risked far too much."

To Zoe's surprise, Rusty laughed. "I realize we've both kept our secrets during our friendship-you keeping the fact your father is involved in organized crime, and me? Well, let's just say that the very safest place for you to stay until we figure out a better plan or nail Sebastian's sorry ass to the wall is with my family. He doesn't stand a chance against my brothers, not to mention all the people who work for them."

Zoe's eyebrows went up in question.

Rusty held up fingers as she ticked off her points. "Apart from the fact that the asshole sheriff is exceedingly protective of our family and is an adopted family member much like myself, my brothers kick asses for a living. They're all ex-military and someone would be a fool to ever cross them in any way, and once you come home with me as a friend? Well, consider yourself a member of the Kelly clan. Their motto is 'no one fucks with the Kellys,' and trust me, sister, that isn't just an idle boast."

"What on earth do they do? I mean, apart from kicking asses for a living and being ex-military."

"They run an organization that takes a wide range of assignments from personal protection to hostage retrieval to messy jobs the government doesn't want to soil their hands on but don't mind throwing KGI under the bus for in order to achieve their purpose. They've done fugitive recovery, rescue missions, obliterated terrorist organizations, and that's when they aren't meeting their significant others while on a mission."

Zoe studied her for a long moment. "You're not joking, are you?"

Rusty shook her head. "Nope. When I say they are the ultimate badasses, I am not in the least bit exaggerating. Wait until you meet them!"

"Uh, maybe that's not a good idea," Zoe mumbled. "I'd feel better staying to myself as much as possible."

Rusty shrugged. "If you come home with me, it's inevitable you'll meet them at some point. Just be yourself and act casual. If you start acting all weird and jumpy then they're going to get suspicious, and that's the last thing we want."

"So you aren't going to tell them about . . . me? I mean, the truth?"

Rusty's eyes grew earnest. "I would never betray your confidence, Zoe. You're my friend, and as far as they're concerned, we're friends who met in college and you're visiting me while we decide what to do with our degrees and futures. The less they know, the better. In fact, no one but the two of us ever needs to know the truth. That's how fuckups happen. I'm going to keep you alive no matter what it takes. I won't let that asshole get his hands on you."

Zoe took a deep breath. "So when do we leave then?"

Chapter 2

"We're almost there," Rusty said cheerfully as they crossed the bridge over Kentucky Lake.

"It's beautiful here," Zoe breathed. "It seems so quiet and peaceful. No hustle and bustle of a big city. Are the people here nice?"

Rusty wrinkled her nose. "For the most part. I mean, like any small town we have our share of nosy busybodies whose sole ambition in life is to make others miserable, but the Kellys are very respected in this area. Frank owns a hardware store in Dover, and as I told you, all six of his and Marlene's sons served in various branches of the military. I was on the other side of the fence growing up. White trash. Troublemaker. Loser. Pick your poison. My life changed when I broke into Frank and Marlene's house because I was starving and my asshole stepfather didn't give a shit about anything except where to score his next hit. He wasn't choosy. Alcohol, drugs, whatever would get him hammered the fastest. Taking care of a stepdaughter dumped on him by his slut of a wife wasn't exactly a priority. I wouldn't have ever stayed the first night with him, but I had nowhere else to go and I was too young at the time to pull off acting older than I was, so I would have just gotten hauled into the foster care system. At least my stepfather was the devil I knew and I learned to get around him." She grimaced. "Most of the time."

"God, Rusty. My life wasn't exactly wonderful, but I was never abused and I never went without. My father saw to it that I had the best of everything. Most likely so I wouldn't be more of an embarrassment to him than I already was. I mean, it was obvious that my own mother had no use for me. She left and couldn't be bothered to take her daughter with her."

Rusty scowled. "I don't see much of a difference in our situations. We were both unwanted, and that does a number on a child, as we can both attest to."

"That's true," Zoe admitted.

"I was so lucky," Rusty said, her features going soft, her eyes lighting with love and pride. "Marlene and Frank are the very best kind of people. Marlene took me in without question, even confronting my asshole stepfather and then permanently removing me from his custody. They even adopted me after I turned eighteen because they wanted me to know they truly did consider me a part of the family. Their daughter."

"They sound wonderful," Zoe said wistfully.

"Wait until you meet them," Rusty said, smiling. "I give it a day before Marlene claims you as family. My brothers give her shit about her propensity for collecting 'strays.' Strays being all the people she's adopted into the family over the years. It's impossible not to love her and Frank."

"They sound too good to be true," Zoe admitted.

"They're the real deal. You'll see soon enough."

Zoe twirled the ends of her long hair nervously through her fingers and glanced at her reflection in the side-view mirror.

A bit disappointed
By Ana winegar
I am a big fan of the kgi series, i own every book ebook and paperback. That being said i was a bit disappointed with this one. She made the heroin a very week girl. Many scene were very repetitive and at some points she would use words describing the same thing in different ways. I stopped many times reading because i was getting frustrated with it. I finished out of principle and price! I wanted Joe to have a better story. I hope Rustys doesn't disappoints when it comes out.

Had No Action!!
By Lori McCarthy
First off I need to say that I feel one of the reasons Ms. Banks writing in this series has changed so much is the constantly conflicting reviews. The last several books were given poor reviews mainly due to the violence done to the heroine. In this book there was no depth to the heroine, she just kept repeating her self loathing and we never really learned her back story. Who was this Sebastian and how did he find her, what happened after the small bit of action? Allie was shot, apparently had surgery, but we never heard anymore about her character. Joe made no sense as he went from never wanting to settle down to being madly in love in 3 days. There has been tension between Rusty and Sean forever but we are really never given much real background in it. The intimate scenes in this book were mechanical and PG at best, I blame this on the fact that Ms Banks has had so many bad reviews because anyone who has ever read any of her other novels knows she can write great sex. I've read all the other books in this series except the last one, I didn't buy it because of some of the early reviews and the price. I'm going to go back and buy it, because I've read all the other books in this series but that one. Up until this book I've enjoyed the series, some more than others, but I have a feeling that this glossed over PG version is in some ways the author trying to appease the negative reviews of the last book. I hope this episode is a one off, as I plan to continue buying this series. Ms Banks please go back to the way you wrote the series in the beginning, with great sex and lots of action!

I am unbelievably disappointed with this book
By Julie H.
I am unbelievably disappointed with this book!

Joe's insta-love was more insta-lust and the chemistry was zip. Maybe Zoe was too preoccupied with her annoyingly beat down attitude to really notice Joe. I kept waiting for Zoe to grow a pair instead of crying a river of sorrow, but it. never. happens.

And the villains! What did KGI do to the villains?! KGI storms the fortress for a rescue and "poof"! Baddies are gone and everyone is back home recuperating. Seriously?! What happened to the suspense part of the book?

The suspense was lacking and the romance didn't click. The only worthwhile piece of this book were the few mentions of Sean and Rusty. I wish I had checked a copy of this book from my library because I could have saved my pennies for something more substantial. Very disappointed.

Amazon.com Review
Now that the present has caught up with William Gibson's vision of the future, which made him the most influential science fiction writer of the past quarter century, he has started writing about a time--our time--in which everyday life feels like science fiction. With his previous novel, Pattern Recognition, the challenge of writing about the present-day world drove him to create perhaps his best novel yet, and in Spook Country he remains at the top of his game. It's a stripped-down thriller that reads like the best DeLillo (or the best Gibson), with the lives of a half-dozen evocative characters connected by a tightly converging plot and by the general senses of unease and wonder in our networked, post-9/11 time.

Across the Border to Spook Country

For the last few decades, William Gibson, who grew up in Virginia and elsewhere in the United States, has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, just across the border from Amazon.com's Seattle headquarters, which made for a short drive for a lunchtime interview before the release of Spook Country. We met just a few miles from where the storylines of the new novel, in a rare scene set in Gibson's own city, converge. You can read the full transcript of the interview, in which we discussed, among other things, writing in the age of Google, visiting the Second Life virtual world, the possibilities of science fiction in an age of rapid change, and his original proposal for Spook Country, which we have available for viewing on our site. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Amazon.com: Could you start by telling us a little bit about the scenario of the new book?

William Gibson: It's a book in which shadowy and mysterious characters are using New York's smallest crime family, a sort of boutique operation of smugglers and so-called illegal facilitators, to get something into North America. And you have to hang around to the end of the book to find out what they're doing. So I guess it's a caper novel in that regard.

Amazon.com: The line on your last book, Pattern Recognition was that the present had caught up with William Gibson's future. So many of the things you imagined have come true that in a way it seems like we're all living in science fiction now. Is that the way you felt when you came to write that book, that the real world had caught up with your ideas?

Gibson: Well, I thought that writing about the world today as I perceive it would probably be more challenging, in the real sense of science fiction, than continuing just to make things up. And I found that to absolutely be the case. If I'm going to write fiction set in an imaginary future now, I'm going to need a yardstick that gives me some accurate sense of how weird things are now. 'Cause I'm going to have to go beyond that. And I think over the course of these last two books--I don't think I'm done yet--I've been getting a yardstick together. But I don't know if I'll be able to do it again. I don't know if I'll be able to make up an imaginary future in the same way. In the '80s and '90s--as strange as it may seem to say this--we had such luxury of stability. Things weren't changing quite so quickly in the '80s and '90s. And when things are changing too quickly, as one of the characters in Pattern Recognition says, you don't have any place to stand from which to imagine a very elaborate future.

Amazon.com: Now that you're writing about the present, do you consider yourself a science fiction writer these days? Because the marketplace still does.

Gibson: I never really believed in the separation. But science fiction is definitely where I'm from. Science fiction is my native literary culture. It's what I started reading, and I think the thing that actually makes me a bit different than some of the science fiction writers I've met who are my own age is that I discovered Edgar Rice Burroughs and William Burroughs in the same week. And I started reading Beat poets a year later, and got that in the mix. That really changed the direction. But it seems like such an old-fashioned way of looking at things. And it's better not to be pinned down. It's a matter of where you're allowed to park. If you can park in the science fiction bookstore, that's good. If you can park in the other bookstore, that's really good. If people come and buy it at Amazon, that's really good.

I'm sure I must have readers from 20 years ago who are just despairing of the absence of cyberstuff, or girls with bionic fingernails. But that just the way it is. All of that stuff reads so differently now. I think nothing dates more quickly than science fiction. Nothing dates more quickly than an imaginary future. It's acquiring a patina of quaintness even before you've got it in the envelope to send to the publisher.

Amazon.com: So do you think that's your own career path, that you're less interested in imagining a future, or do you think that the world is changing?

Gibson: I think it's actually both. Until fairly recently, I had assumed that it was me, me being drawn to use this toolkit I'd acquired when I was a teenager, and using my old SF toolkit in some kind of attempt at naturalism, 21st-century naturalistic fiction. But over the last five to six years it's started to seem to me that there's something else going on as well, that maybe we're in what the characters in my novel Idoru call a "nodal point," or a series of them. We're in a place where things could just go anywhere. A couple of weeks ago I happened to read Charlie Stross's argument as to why he believes that there will never, ever be any manned space travel. It's not going to happen. We're not going to colonize Mars. All of that is just a big fantasy. And it's so convincing. I read that and I'm like, "My god, there goes so much of the fiction I read as a child."

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Set in the same high-tech present day as Pattern Recognition, Gibson's fine ninth novel offers startling insights into our paranoid and often fragmented, postmodern world. When a mysterious, not yet actual magazine, Node, hires former indie rocker–turned–journalist Hollis Henry to do a story on a new art form that exists only in virtual reality, Hollis finds herself investigating something considerably more dangerous. An operative named Brown, who may or may not work for the U.S. government, is tracking a young, Russian-speaking Cuban-Chinese criminal named Tito. Brown's goal is to follow Tito to yet another operative known only as the old man. Meanwhile, a mysterious cargo container with CIA connections repeatedly appears and disappears on the worldwide Global Positioning network, never quite coming to port. At the heart of the dark goings-on is Bobby Chombo, a talented but unbalanced specialist in Global Positioning software who refuses to sleep in the same spot two nights running. Compelling characters and crisp action sequences, plus the author's trademark metaphoric language, help make this one of Gibson's best. 8-city author tour. (Aug.)

From The New Yorker
As in his previous novel, Gibson abandons the futuristic dystopias that have sustained most of his career, picturing instead a dystopic present—specifically, a post-9/11 America, which, in thrall to ubiquitous media and vague threats of annihilation, has "developed Stockholm syndrome toward its own government." The convoluted and politically insistent plot involves a missing shipping container, a former rock star, a Cuban-Chinese crime-facilitating family, and an Ativan addict coerced into domestic espionage. Fanciful touches include the creation of virtual art in public spaces using satellite mapping and Wi-Fi; texting in Volapuk, a Cyrillic-Latin amalgam; encrypting data within songs on an iPod; and the C.I.A.’s recruitment of sea pirates in the war on terrorism. (All but the last are verifiably real.) If Gibson’s vision has got bleaker, his eye for the eerie in the everyday still lends events an otherworldly sheen

I didn't just read this book, I experienced it. Wow!
By Fascinatingbooks
Once in a great while a book comes along that transcends the events written about and explains something of deep and cosmic importance. I was stunned by the real story, uncoiling like an invisible serpent of stars, behind the "on the page" story of a woman hired to possibly write for a new magazine, and a parallel story of intrigue amongst a motley collection of spies. These stories coil around each other like a DNA helix to create a new being, a glimpse into a future that could go so wrong or incredibly right. This is Hollis in Wonderland as told by Gibson, a sci-fi cyber punk writer of epic proportions. I am practically obsessed with this book, both in print and the audio read in an intimate and engaging way by the incomparable Robertson Dean. The story is interdimensional, with so many levels to explore I can get lost in a single sentence like a maze that opens doors in my own mind. I didn't just read this book, I experienced it like a psychedelic trip down a white Lego lined rabbit hole.

William Gibson, I am so disappoint. :(
By Meirelle
I was excited to read this book. William Gibson is one of my favorite authors. When he stopped writing cyberpunk scifi, I was skeptical, but I gave his non-sf novel "Pattern Recognition" a try anyway, and I'm glad I did. It took a while to get into, but once I did, I couldn't put it down! Since "Spook Country" takes place in the same world, I was prepared for the story to start out slow. After all, I stuck with "Pattern Recognition" for over 50 pages before it got interesting, and I was rewarded.

"Spook Country" still had me waiting at over 200 pages. There was next to no plot, and I didn't care at all about the characters. Chapters are hardly that-- just little insignificant snapshots of these characters' daily lives. It seemed more like an experimental writing exercise than a novel. Don't get me wrong-- sometimes that sort of thing can work, but in this case it didn't.

If I had to wade through over half of the book, no amount of awesome plot twist will be able to make up for the painful experience of reading those first 200 pages. I went through hell with this book. I tried to keep on going-- I really did. I wanted to like this book because it was written by William Gibson. However, the truth is that it's terrible, and I sighed with relief when I finally decided to give up on it-- "Finally, reading can be FUN again!"

hard to get engaged
By MV
This was a book for bookgroup or I would not have finished it. I found it very difficult to become engaged and never did. What put me off is that the character development is very superficial, and, I wasn't remotely interested in any of the characters. They seemed like randomly generated one dimensional people (maybe this is part of Gibson's message, which is clearly something to do with technology and its advancement). That brings me to the second issue that made the book not enjoyable for me. I couldn't really figure out if it had any point, meaning or even a theme except for perhaps general confusion in this chaotic, technological world.

There is a goal the characters are working towards (well, some of them). I don't think I should state the goal though because it is kind of the main center of the plot and would give it away (I think. . . ). Other characters motives and drives seem largely enigmatic. Lots of questions raised about the nature of reality, but I wasn't quite sure what the questions were or what the novel had to say about them. My confusion could just be a lack of knowledge about technology and computers and their insidious insinuation into our lives (which is also a theme, I think).

This book helped prepare me for the EC-Council CEHv8 exam. The author does a good job of explaining why some possible answers are wrong, how others are just distractions, and pointing out why the answer is the right answer. The test on the CD helped me identify where I needed more study.( I used this book as an adjunct to the EC-Council CEH v8 training courseware.)

Good Supplemental Study Guide For Beginners, Refresher for Experienced IT Professionals
By threefinker
This book was great and covered a lot of relevant CEH topics in depth. I actually found the questions in this guide to be more challenging in some ways. That being said, there were a few minor errors in the book. For instance, there's a question about the chmod command (Question 5 - Attacking Systems Chapter) that incorrectly says that 'chmod 711 file.txt' gives read-only permissions to the group and others, whereas the correct answer would be 'chmod 744 file.txt.' Overall, the errors were fairly few and far between though.

Anyways, I exclusively studied the questions from this book and was able to pass the CEH v9 exam today with an 80%. Granted, I do have a couple years experience as an IT security professional, in addition to an A.S in Cyber Security, a B.S. in IT Management and two IT security certifications (Sec+ and GCIH), but I honestly don't think any of those things gave me too much of an advantage when it came to answering the questions on the exam. I think you'd probably need to study more than this book if you're without any prior experience or education on the subject.

Gatsby Girls, by F. Scott Fitzgerald

She was an impulsive, fashionable, and carefree 1920's woman who embodied the essence of the Gatsby Girl, F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife, Zelda. As Fitzgerald said, "I married the heroine of my stories." All of the eight short stories contained in this collection were inspired by Zelda.

Fitzgerald, one of the foremost writers of American fiction, found early success as a short story writer for the most widely read magazine of the early 20th century - The Saturday Evening Post. Fitzgerald's stories, first published by the Post between 1920 and 1922, brought the Jazz Age and the flapper to life and confirmed that America was changing faster than ever before. Women were bobbing their hair, drinking, and flirting shamelessly, and Fitzgerald brought these exciting girls to life in the pages of the Post.

A foreword by Jeff Nilsson, archivist for the Post, adds historical context to this wonderful, new collection, which is highlighted by an introduction written by Fitzgerald himself. Listen to the stories that made F. Scott Fitzgerald one of the most beloved writers in America -- and around the world - still today.

Fitzgerald Fever
By JamieP
Fine, I'll admit that I've caught the Fitzgerald fever. I had only read The Great Gatsby in high school (it might have been more of a skim...), but as soon as I started seeing all the ads for the new movie I knew I had to re-read it before it came back to the big screen. I sat down, champagne in hand, and finished that bad boy...and quick. Ravenous, I searched high and low for my next fix. Voila, Gatsby Girls. These little morsels of stories were so delicious, and I went through it pretty quickly. I can't recommend this book enough! If you want more Gatsby goodness, you'll need this one on your shelves.

a new woman emerges
By joan e. dugan
Loved reading about this new woman, sometimes brash ,contrary, as wiley and vindictive as a man, definitely learning to play the game. sometimes it backfires, sometimes they are caught in the traditional versus the new values. All the women were interesting. Each was a little bit of Zelda as F. Scott sought to understand her. The southern woman puzzled him too.

Great Gatsby Fever
By Dale
I can't wait for The Great Gatsby movie so I picked up this book to get in the mood. The romance stories are all about what was a very special woman in the 1920's-- an independent smart sassy young woman. Apparently all the characters are loosely based on Fitzgerald's wife. I felt like I was peeking in the window of someone's home at times. A fun naughty feeling. Highly recommend.

One of the most important political and ethical issues faced during a political transition from authoritarian or totalitarian to democratic rule is how to deal with legacies of repression. This book explores the important aspect of transitional politics, assessing how Portugal, Spain, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Germany after reunification, Russia, the Southern Cone of Latin America and Central America, as well as South Africa, have confronted legacies of repression.

Review
The outstanding merit of this book lies in its value as a reference text. The excellent bibliographical survey of the literature includes web-based material and surveys the main debates about transitional truth and justice, compensation and restitution, the politics of memory including issues of commemoration ... The icing on the rich cake of this book is provided by the 54 pages of references cited by the various authors, and including references for the works included in the bibliographical essay. The scholarship is apparent, and the value of this work - as a reference, and a detached, legal and scientific analysis in a field that is often heavy with emotion - is clear. The Global Review of Ethnopolitics The chapters on countries/regions provide valuable insights into the specifics of the case studies they examine, and also contribute insights that have broader applicability. Many of these broader insights are brought together in the impressive encyclopedic analysis contained in the conclusion. The Global Review of Ethnopolitics The book's overall conclusions on truth processes and commissions are particularly of interest to a Northern Ireland audience, where the debate continues about the viability or desirability of some formal truth process. The Global Review of Ethnopolitics Highly recommended to students of transitions to democracy, human rights lawyers and activists, politicians and constitution-designers involved in the framing of institutions of new democracies and to the general public interested in the difficult struggles of Truth and Justice. Democratization This interdisciplinary study is a welcome addition to the literature ... the book maintains an internal coherence, an aim difficult to achieve in this kind of collective work. It is an illuminating interdisciplinary contribution to the topic, enriched from different perspectives and disciplines. Democratization

Advanced Electric Drives: Analysis, Control and Modeling Using Simulink, by Ned Mohan

This textbook follows the treatment of electric machines and drives in my earlier textbook "Electric Drives – An Integrative Approach." I have attempted to use the same notation to provide consistency. If I am asked to list three unique features of this book, the following are foremost in my opinion:

Keeping it simple without being simplistic,
Avoiding unnecessary mathematics, and
Providing a “physical” picture as much as possible for visualization purposes.

The third item above needs elaboration. Most research literature and textbooks in this field treat dq-axis transformation of a-b-c phase quantities on a purely mathematical basis, without relating this transformation to a set of windings that could be visualized. The approach adopted in this book is different but leads to the same results - we visual a set of representative dq windings along an orthogonal set of axes and then relate their currents and voltages to the a-b-c phase quantities. This discussion follows seamlessly from the treatment of space vectors and the equivalent winding representation in steady state in the previous course.

For discussion of all topics in this course, computer simulations are a necessity. For this purpose, I have chosen Simulink® for the following reasons: a student-version that is more than sufficient for our purposes is available at a very reasonable price and it takes extremely short time to become proficient in its use. Moreover, this software simplifies the development of a real-time controller of drives in the hardware laboratory for student experimentation – such a laboratory, using 42-V (a future standard for automotive voltages) machines, is at present under development using a digital signal processor based rapid-prototyping tool.

All chapters in this book can be covered in a single-semester course. The MATLAB® and the Simulink® files used in examples are included on a cd-rom attached to this book. The reader is urged to first look at the read-me file on this cd-rom before reading this textbook.

Analysis, control and modelling of electrical machines
By Antonis
very good book for students which are studying electrical machines, i recommend this book since it is very illustrative, i mean there are a lot of schematics which helps you to understand whats going on......In addition, there was some errors in some of the equations but the writer is sending the corrections along with the book (i.e. very small typical mistakes which happens when you typing very fast on the computer keyboard).

thanks

Not as good as I thought
By aesanchez
Unfortunately, I do not recommend the book. I think the author has trĂed to oversimplify the analysis and in the process has lost and confuss several important concepts. I found it very difficult to follow the straight forward concepts I am familiar with and which are much better explained in other books.

I bought the book thinking of using it in the electrical machines drives course I teach.

Fabulous, deep, amazing book
By Jessica
One of my all time favorite series. Full of great characters, amazing settings, fabulous story lines, and if you read the whole series of 4 books, you'll get into philosophy, religion, ethics, science, the future of mankind in several forms, and a story you won't be able to put down. I cry my eyes out every single time I read the last book, and I've read them all several times. I bought this book to replace one that I loaned out to someone who never gave it back. Goes to show why I don't like to loan my books out. These are incredibly well written, deep and thoughtful, and you will love these books. Almost impossible to describe with any shade of accuracy. I can tell you what it's about and it's like saying the ocean is big. You know what big is, but until you see it, you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Read this, and then the others. You won't regret it.

One Of My New Favorites!
By Tory Harrington
This book vaulted to the top five of my all-time favorites list. It is that good. To start with, it is important to know that the format of this book is a little bit unusual. It is essentially several short stories that flesh out details of the characters and how they got to the point where the novel begins. While there are sections of the "present" they do not make up a majority of the plot. That being said, when the characters are so well realized and the stories so compelling, it makes the story work to perfection. There are a lot of unexpected twists, the writing is beautiful, and there are a lot of mysteries that I was excited to keep reading about. One word of caution: the book drops you in and throws around names and terms without spelling out for you what they mean. It becomes clear as you continue reading, but at the very beginning it may rub some people the wrong way. It is worth it to stick with it however, as it is a masterpiece.

A friend suggested I might like this book
By ocellaris7
I have read so many fantasy books/series, but I've had a hard time getting into sci fi -- I think because I've tended to pick up old school AI or intellectual sci fi. It just bores me. A friend suggested I might like this book. I didn't like it --- I LOVED IT! I loved the character development and the slow reveal of each character's backstory. It's just so well done and so artistically written. It may not have the cultural significance of The Lord of the Rings or the Foundation Trilogy, or the fanbase of A Song of Fire and Ice. However, as an artful, tightly constructed, interesting story, there aren't many that can compete with the Hyperion Cantos series, including the three aforementioned series. The second through fourth books in the Cantos series are also excellent, but pale slightly in comparison to the experience of reading the first book.
