About the Author
Michael G. Maxfield is Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College, City University of New York. He is the author of numerous articles and books on a variety of topics, including victimization, policing, homicide, community corrections, and long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect. Working with students and colleagues at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center, Professor Maxfield developed the evidence generation approach to applied justice research. He is editor of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency.

Earl R. Babbie graduated from Harvard University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching shortly thereafter. Credited with defining research methods for the social sciences, Dr. Babbie has written several texts, including the bestselling THE PRACTICE OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.

Horrible book

This book could easily be condensed to 100 pages if the author took out the constant repitition and examples. I am fine with one or two examples being used to clarify a subject but this book is seriously about 3/4ths examples. The book is also incredibly dry and an overall pain to read.

Difficult to follow

By far, this is the most difficult to read textbook that I've ever encountered. It is filled with repetition that makes you feel as if you've read the same line over and over again. Possibly worse so, the book is quite dry and full of sentences (many of which are fragments) that will make you stop and wonder what in the world the author is talking about.

Three out of four ain't bad

This is a collection of four stories by Jack London, most of which are very good. The collection is named after the first story, "The Red One", an excellent piece of old school science fiction along the lines of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, or Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. It tells the story of a naturalist lost on the island of Guadalcanal, searching for a mysterious red object worshipped by the island's natives. It's incredibly inventive, years ahead of its time, suspenseful, brilliantly told, and one of London's best stories.

Another great adventure story is "Like Argus of the Ancient Times", about a former California `49er who, in his seventies, decides to set out for the Klondike for one more chance at striking it rich. While "The Red One" probably deserves a place in London's top ten, "Argus" just might make the top twenty. "The Princess" is about three aged hobos who cross paths and trade stories about their youthful adventures in the South Pacific. It's another well-told yarn, though it suffers a bit from an anticlimactic ending. The weakest story in the collection is "The Hussy" about a railroad worker's quest for gold in Ecuador. It's nothing special.

While this is a solid collection of London stories, I have to dock him a point for some of his descriptive passages of the South Sea island "savages". There's been much debate about London's views on race. I usually give him the benefit of the doubt on that subject, as it may be too much to expect political correctness from century-old stories. However, when you compare "The Red One" to Herman Melville's Typee, for example, the latter proves that even 100 years ago it was possible to write about the natives with a great deal more respect and tact than London displays here.

Suspenseful turn-of-the-century horror, sci-fi lifts anthology

You finally set eyes upon your destination after months at sea: The island of Guadacanal. A lush, green paradise--or so it seems. For as you and your party leave the beach and broach the "jungle heart", in search of the source of an alluring yet alien melody, suddenly your guide falls to the ground. You look down and see that he has lost his head! You swing your shotgun around, but the attacker isn't around. Was it man or beast? Or perhaps it was inspired--maddened--by the unseen sound: Something so beautiful yet it emanates from a force so fearful and awesome that the natives you soon encounter speak of it barely; and when done so, in cautious reverence. But, as a scientist, you must discover the source (no matter the cost). Thus begins the grizzly hunt for...THE RED ONE.

Though actually a short story anthology that includes "The Hussy"; "Like Argus of the Ancient Times"; and "The Princess," the book bears the name of its lead story--and rightfully so--"The Red One." It's an exotic blend of horror and sci-fi that isn't at all one of Jack London's better known works. It has the definite feel of Joseph Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness" and H.G. Wells's "The Island of Dr. Moreau," with a pared down amount of Lovecraftian surrealism. The introspection and observation that exists in "The Red One" is survivalist in tone--no surprise, coming from Jack London--and centers upon Bassett: A white explorer-scientist who combs the Pacific jungle wilds. His unintentional "discovery" comes rather late, but it's an interesting journey to it. There is lush imagery throughout and decent secondary character development (although it exhibits a rather racist, sexist strain that fits much of the turn-of-the-century mindset). And, the ending will probably come as a shock to fans of modern sci-fi and horror, but will be par for the course for London aficionados.

So while this anthology's other stories are comparatively the unspectacular, ramblings of mostly landlubbers turned hard-bitten sea-farers or prospectors, "The Red One" veers off course for a fairly suspenseful excursion that twists and turns into sci-fi and horror. A nice antique for fans of both genres who might be pleasantly surprised by Jack London's ability to occasionally broach the other-wordly.

Martin Hopkinson APMP is a Principal Consultant with QinetiQ, specialising in risk management and project governance. Martin has led the risk management process on several multi-billion pound projects and is lead developer for the Risk Maturity Model. Introduction to the Book

I strongly recommend reading carefully the introduction of this book. The author explains, very clearly, what is the purpose of the book that addresses an important need: "where an organization is in terms of Risk Management Maturity". The introduction gives the reader a couple of examples regarding the results an organization can obtain through the Risk Assessment Maturity Model.

Overview of Book's Structure

This book is organized, very clearly and in a simple and easy way to read, in two parts:

* Introduction to the Project Risk Maturity Model
* Guide to the Project Risk Maturity Model

It has five chapters in the Introduction part and six chapters in the second part of the book. It also uses a lot of tables and figures with examples that are very useful to understand the content of the book. This book can facilitate assessors and organizations to figure out where they are in terms of Risk Management process implementation.

The structure of the book is easy to follow, and add many real examples that helps the reader to understand the main points the book deal with.

Highlights: What I liked!

I liked the graphics that are very clear and understandable. Graphics are fundamental to understand what to do and how to do it regarding Risk Management Maturity.

I liked the examples and case studies, and also the recommendations provided by the author.

I liked the CD included, because readers will have a tool to use (tangible things and added value).

Shortfalls: What was Missing!

The book is great but a little bit serious. Probably some funny story, I'm sure the author knows, would be fantastic if were added. In any case the author did a great job.

A good book

I got hold of this book to have a look at the material on the risk maturity model, but what I gained from it was something different.

For me the maturity model assessment questions and summaries are not as useful as the author's discussion of good and bad practices, and how they should be scored. There's an excellent example of multi-pass project modelling/analysis in chapter 3 and I cheered inwardly as he explained how common but flawed practices should be scored.

Many assessment frameworks are let down by rather vague questions that require rather subjective answers. The guidance in this book goes a long way to solving that problem for the assessment framework presented.

It has great information on the essential oils

I ordered this book because a friend has it and loves it. It has great information on the essential oils; however it appears this version is missing the appendix on the recommended applications of the oils (where on your body to apply them).

I love to sit and relax at night with this book

Just so everyone knows, this book is almost exactly the same as Emotional Healing with Essential Oils by Daniel Macdonald. The main difference is this one is the most current edition so it has a description of every doTerra single oil and blend. The descriptions are fascinating! I love to sit and relax at night with this book. It's a great one to comb through time and time again. I always reference this when making blends for myself and others. The emotions wheel is a really fun quick reference tool also. I'll be giving my older copy of this same book to my sister so she can enjoy it!

I found out about this book from an essential oils class I took and I'm so very happy I bought it! It's worth having. If you are an emotional person or someone in your family is, it's a great book to have! Even if you are not emotional there are emotions in this book that I didn't know existed! Great buy! Goes hand and hand with The Essential Life book! Also the wheel is a great quick tool to have!

About the Author

Amy Wagenfeld received a BS in occupational therapy, an MA in human development, and a PhD in education. Amy has 20 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in various pediatric contexts, including school systems, outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinics, and private practice. Amy is on the faculty at Lasell College in Newton, MA. In addition to her teaching and mentoring duties, Amy is the Clinical Director of Children's Therapy Connections, which provides consultative services and workshops to parents, administrators, teachers, and childcare providers.

Amy's research interests include the influence of music on the development of early attachment connections between babies and primary caregivers as well as the human-animal connection. Amy has presented her work on occupational therapy, human development, and attachment at local, state, and national conferences. Amy is also involved with several state and local nonprofit advocacy and community service organizations and is in the process of writing several other books on topics related to occupational therapy, attachment, and animal-assisted therapy.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Amy is a passionate organic gardener. Amy, her husband Jeff, their wonderful and amazing 17-year-old son David, and incredibly spoiled dog Glacier live in suburban Boston, where they all enjoy traveling, long walks, trips to the beach, and tennis.

Jennifer Kaldenberg is Director of Occupational Therapy Services at New England College of Optometry and the New England Eye Institute. She received her BS in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire and an MSA in Administration with a concentration in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University. Jennifer has over 10 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in neurological and visual rehabilitation. Jennifer previously was an assistant professor at Lasell College in Newton, MA and currently lectures at the New England College of Optometry.

Jennifer's research interests include the impact of vision on functional independence, visual perception, and neurological visual impairment. She has spoken extensively on the role of occupational therapy in vision rehabilitation to occupational therapy practitioners, optometrists, and the general public.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Jennifer and her husband Casey are the proud parents of three wonderful boys who all enjoy participating in sporting activities and traveling together. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys painting, drawing, and cooking.

Good for OTA and OT students

I used this book as an OTA student and now use it frequently as an OT student, in class and on fieldwork. It's better than the book I had to buy for OT school. I like how it's set up and the layout makes it easy to find what I'm looking for. Straightforward and practical information.

Not the best book for peds

I did not really like this book. It made it difficult to understand anything. it was not my favorite and enjoyed the other pediatric textbook in class.

Excellent book

I am a student hoping to get into an OTA program and really wish to work with peds when I graduate. I started reading this book as a jump start before my actualy OTA classes begin and it is very helpful. I would recommend it.
