Author with Impeccable Credentials Gives Clear, Easy to Understand - and Shocking - History and Warning

The author's credentials are impeccable - start with winning the Nobel Prize for Economics, among other things - and you can rely on the information and message in this book to be written from the vantage point witnessed few people, and understood by even fewer. This nether "conservative bashing" or "liberal bashing;" rather, "idiot bashing" and "ideologue bashing" as we learn that the current policies, efforts, objectives and results of the World Bank (and it's parter, the IMF) are now in complete opposition to the very raison d'être and principles on which it was founded. Stiglitz presents both the 30,000 foot view and the ground view, shows us the forest as well as the trees. This book is fundamental reading for anyone hoping to understand the world finance situation, the role of the U.S., the continuing underlying problems that cause the world to leap from one financial crises to another. Importantly, you learn why all this money thrown at problems simply isn't working - but how it once did, and could again.

This should be considered a companion book of a trilogy to those wishing to learn from highly educated, directly-experienced and politically objective experts - those who have "been there, done that" - who reveal to us the inner workings of world politics and why it is so ineffective and counter-productive the way it is currently being managed. The other two are Prestowitz's "Globalization and "Rogue Nation: American Unilateralism and the Failure of Good Intentions" and Friedman's "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century." These independent, well-respected authors of their respective best-sellers present findings and analysis that convincingly dovetail with the others' works.

(For a fantastic and exciting supplemental read, John Perkins "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" is an amazing tale from the ground floor of, in his words, the work of "an economic hit man.") Incredible as his story is, it also dovetails precisely with what these other authors - a Nobel prize winner, a counsellor to the Secretary of commerce and special economic envoy to Japan, and a New York Times journalist- have consistently and convincingly presented as the same story and delivered as a remarkably similar conclusion from their different perspectives.

Mixed Bag

It takes some temerity to add yet another to 35 existing reviews of this book! But I do have a rather different reading of it. Previous reviewers seem to have thought that it was either the cat's meow or just a venomous attack. I am somewhere in between. The book makes a number of excellent, telling points against IMF and World Bank policies and assumptions. It does this in the context of what is, indeed, a full-scale attack--no punches pulled. Stiglitz' alternatives are not always the most viable or well-considered, either. So, three or four stars for good critique, but nothing for balance or for coherent solutions.
What worries me more is Stiglitz' lack of attention to a couple of notorious facts about the WB and IMF. He mentions them and then goes on to other things. First, these agencies have routinely supported the most unspeakably brutal and murderous dictatorships: Marcos in the Philippines, Mobutu in Zaire (now Congo), Rios Montt in Guatemala, the thugs of Sudan, the military junta in Indonesia, and on and on. They continued to do this for years after it became general knowledge that these regimes were using the loans, and other aid, to line their pockets and to buy weapons to suppress their own people--and then they ran down their countries' health and education systems to pay back the loans. This wasn't economic theory at work and it wasn't ignorance. We still need a serious study of this. The notorious lack of accountability, stressed by Stiglitz, has to be remedied.
Second, the World Bank in particular, and now the WTO also, have routinely gone up against the environment--though they know perfectly well that everyone, and especially the poor in the Third World, depends on the environment for survival. A highly-placed World Bank researcher (necessarily unnamed here!) told me some time ago that the World Bank's own studies show that all their big-dam projects cost more than they produce in benefits. The costs are born by the poor (especially those displaced by the reservoirs). The benefits largely go to the rich. The WTO's policies on "free" trade are notorious; they tolerate without protest the enormous subsidies that First World governments give their farmers (as pointed out by Stiglitz) but they won't bend a millimetre to protect forests, fish, and wildlife that are vital to the survival of Third World poor. We need a much better study and account of all this.
Whatever is going on in the non-transparent boardrooms of these agencies, the effect has been to keep the Third World in its classic position: an impoverished supplier of raw materials to the First World. The worst thing about the WB-IMF-WTO policy mix is that it routinely leads to the sacrifice not only of the environment but also of long-term investments like education. Without an educated workforce, the Third World is doomed to permanent poverty and backwardness. Everybody knows this, but the policies go on.
I wish Stiglitz, or someone, would take all this on.

Critique and Questioning: Policy setting, Globalized, World Economy

I like Stiglitz - he always gets me to thinking! Per Stiglitz, "The [International Monetary Fund's] policies. . . the outworn presumption that markets, by themselves, lead to efficient outcomes, failed to allow for desirable government interventions in the market, measures which can guide economic growth and make everyone better off. . . . many of the disputes that I describe in the following pages is a matter of ideas, and conceptions of the role of the government that derive from those ideas" (p. xiii). Part of Stiglitz critique is his observation that IMF's "remedies failed as often, or even more often than they worked" (p. xiv).

This book is Stiglitz discussion of the world economic order particularly the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization and the effects of globalization. I read this book largely because economics is not my field of study and I wanted to learn more about the global economy, how it worked, and what some of the critique and questions might be about it. I found this book to be quite accessible, the explanations and discussion served to give me new 'ear' with which to listen to media commentary and reporting.

Like most other self help books

There is no question about the knowledge, experience, and popularity of Joe Friel. This book however, is the least helpful and weakest of his efforts. Like most other self help books, the entire message can be boiled down to 1-2 sentence message, in this case it is that the LSD (long slow distance) rides, so called " junk miles" that most of us use do not have the impact on our fitness that we would like or hope but rather one needs to add high intensity interval training to increase or maintain (against aging-induced losses) fitness. We all know this don't we? If you do not already lift weights to increase strength, he tells you to do that too but leaves you to find out how to do this on your own. The addition of scattered citations from the scientific literature are used to provide authority and endorsement but glaringly appear to be cherry-picked to support his views. Rarely, if at all, is it the case in the real scientific world (I'm a reaarch scientist) that all work supports your view hence - likely cherry-picked. If you own any of his other training books, you already have everything that is in this one. Really nothing new here - sorry Joe.

Feeling disappointed....

I too had pre-ordered this book and at the moment I am stalled on chapter 6 , Advanced training. Joe did a great job in the earlier chapters with the build up and promise of answers. I have read chapture 6 several times as the next section is recovery and I am thinking well is that it as far as training goes? There still seems to be so many questions still unanswered, especially from a multisport triathlon training perspective. The 7 and 9 day training week examples seem more single sport applicable and all you seem to gain is more recovery days. How do I tick off all the things I need to do to train 3 sports within the period ? How many days long can the training week be before too many days have passed before you repeat a session. Overall I am feeling a bit disappointed the book did not deliver what I hoped. Maybe the remaining chapters will compensate? The only other thing I learned is maybe I should go back to focusing on just cycle time trials as masters time trialists seem to maintain their fast times longer than similar aged runners and swimmers according to data presented in the book.

A comprehensive and detailed guide to development of athletic excellence for the senior endurance athlete

Ageing and the impact of ageing on the competitive athlete beyond age 50 is something that has not been written about in book form before. Friel has undertaken a substantial task and done a very good job with the subject matter. The physiologic changes that negatively affect athletic performance beyond age 50 (and to a lesser extent beyond age 40) are fairly drastic as any committed senior athlete can tell you. Friel develops a detailed framework to allow one to understand these changes and the ramifications on performance and then offers a training approach to slow down or possibly even delay the rate of decline. The current state of understanding is nicely summarized in a quote from page 108 of the book:

“This brings us back to the big three- the primary determiners of performance decline with age according to sport science. To refresh your memory, these are declining aerobic capacity, increasing body fat, and loss of muscle mass.”

Friel’s recipe for combating age-related performance decline therefore involves a primary focus on high-intensity workouts, methods for reduction of body fat, and heavy load strength workouts. It is proposed that these three areas are the keys to high performance as a senior athlete.

The book is structured in two parts where Part I (about 1/3 of the book) reviews the literature and describes Friel’s own experience with physiologic changes going on in the human body. This establishes a base-line of what we are up against. Part II describes the various ways that the changes discussed in Part I can be addressed from the perspective of a competitive athlete. Part II includes a substantial amount of guidance on training plans and suggested workouts (along with good appendices that elaborate on work outs in greater detail) as well as discussions of diet and recovery. It is quite comprehensive, if you subscribe to this style of training.

Friel has done a good job of dancing around the whole “diet” morass that is extant. Although he lauds a so-called Paleo diet (and has co-authored a book on the subject with one of the Paleo cult’s pseudo-scientific leaders) he is quick to point out that there is no one diet that works for everyone and that the task is to to determine what works for you.

Friel has written a comprehensive and detailed guide to development of athletic excellence for the senior endurance athlete. The book also provides detailed training recommendations and structures with specific work out descriptions. For the senior endurance athlete, this book will serve well as a reference and as the basis of an operative program for achieving one's potential. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Robert de Levie is the author of more than 160 papers in analytical chemistry and electrochemistry, of an early Spreadsheet Workbook for Quantitative Chemical Analysis, McGraw-Hill, 1992; of a textbook on the Principles of Quantitative Chemical Analysis, McGraw-Hill 1997; of an Oxford Chemistry Primer on Aqueous Acid-Base Equilibria and Titrations, Oxford University Press, 1999; and most recently, of How to Use Excel in Analytical Chemistry, Cambridge University Press, 2001. He was born and raised in the Netherlands, earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, was a postdoctoral fellow with Paul Delahay in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and for 34 years taught analytical chemistry and electrochemistry at Georgetown University. For ten of those years, he was the US editor of the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry. Now an emeritus professor, he lives on Orr's Island, and is associated with Bowdoin College in nearby Brunswick, Maine.

Excellent for scientists and engineers

Advanced Excel does very well what it does, so your main concern is whether what it does interests you. The book is intended for engineers and scientists who do real computation, not intended for those making turnkey applications for businesses.
Three chapters describe the use of Excel for least squares fitting. Treatment is authoritative, including things like phantom relations, orthogonal polynomials, fitting to a Lorentzian, finding the derivative of data, and so forth. Although there is a lot of detail, it is well presented, and you will be able to follow without being an expert yourself. Less extensive but still detailed are chapters on Fourier analysis and on convolution and deconvolution. A brief introduction to numerical integration of ordinary differential equations is exactly that, introductory. Tons of references to other literature are provided.
So, if you have a specialized interest in these topics, this book is a must. What else is here?
Approximately the last half of the book is devoted to writing macros, and to a presentation of macros used in the first half of the book. The publisher maintains a web site where these can be downloaded, saving you the tedium and error of typing them into your computer from the book. The approach is to use message boxes to communicate with computation in VBA. VBA is used primarily as a programming language, and there is rather little about the Excel object model. You will learn very little about worksheet manipulation using VBA.
The reader with less interest in the applications, but an interest in applying Excel to their own problems, will also find a lot of interesting details here. The author knows a lot about Excel, and you will pick up not only the big picture, but also many useful details. For example, how to call Solver from a macro. How to line your charts up with the spreadsheet grid. How to make the most of Excel's graphic abilities.
This book is NOT the typical Excel book full of screen shots and low on content. It teaches by example. By going through the examples presented, you really will learn how to use Excel for your application too.

Advanced Is Not Used Lightly in this Book's Title

If I had written this book I think I would have called it Scientific Excel rather than Advanced Excel. To be sure, the book is certainly for advanced Excel users, but it won't help you do an advanced business application.

You'd best have some knowledge about Excel before starting this one. There's a brief survey of Excel at the beginning that starts off comparing a spreadsheet to an accountant's ledger. That's pretty basic. Anyone with any Excel experience at all can follow the first three pages. On page four he is talking about making a thousand point plot with random numbers, normal distribution -- no longer something from Excel for Dummies. By page 5 he's calculating averages and standard deviations. By the end of this Survey chapter he's talking about the accuracy of the calculations performed by Excel.

Subsequent chapters discuss various types of mathematical manipulation that are often needed in the analysis of scientific data.

There are three chapters on Least Squares. This is the fitting of a curve to collected data so that the trends might be more easily visualized.

There is a chapter on Fourier Transformations, which is the probably the most frequently used analysis tool when working in signal processing. Geophysical seismic data, radar receivers, cell phone systems are all processed primarily using Fourier Transforms. This kind of data is of course too voluminous for Excel, but the techniques used here would be ideal for quite a number of laboratory applications.

A couple of chapters cover convolution, deconvolution, and time-frequency analysis as well as Numerical integration of ordinary differential equations.

All of these processing tasks are done using macros. These are described in the book, or can be downloaded from the author's website -- [...] This web site also includes some additional macros that enhance Excel's computationability when handling numbers of higher precision.

The final four chapters of the book are on writing your own or modifying existing macros, with an orientation to scientific analysis.

I consider this to be almost a mandatory book for anyone interested in using Excel to analysis scientific data.

Scientific number-crunching with Excel

This book by Robert de Levie is a thorough and comprehensive how-to guide to the use of the Excel program on common numerical tasks in physical science. It starts with a chapter that surveys the capabilities of the Excel program itself. It then continues with three chapters of progressively increasing sophistication on the method of least squares, followed by single chapters on Fourier transformation, convolution and deconvolution, and numerical solution of differential equations. The final four chapters are given over to the writing of macros and the author's presentation of the many macros he has developed in the course of solving the problems illustrated in the book. Readers should be aware that all of these macros, as well as the numerical data used in many of the examples, are also available in computer-readable form from the publisher's web site and, in fact, are available to purchasers and nonpurchasers alike.

I should acknowledge at the outset that I am very much NOT a fan of Excel. However, the program is by now so firmly established that there is little doubt of the value of the contents of this book to many in the intended audience of scientists and engineers. Moreover, there is also plenty of value for those of us who prefer to use computational tools other than Excel. Since my own primary interests relative to this book fall within the chapters on least-squares methods, that is where I will direct my specific comments.

As already noted, the book is about computations, not about theory, so although key working equations are often presented, they are seldom derived. Thus a beginner wanting to understand the method of least squares might want to consult another source to complement the "nuts and bolts" provided by the examples illustrated here.

Chapter 2 is devoted to the simplest of least-squares (LS) problems, unweighted fitting to a straight line (including one forced to go through the origin). This chapter also introduces the important topic of propagation of error (called propagation of imprecision by the author in an attempt to improve the terminology). A number of common applications are considered, the most important of which is probably the role of linear LS in calibration in analytical chemistry. This is, incidentally, an application where the common textbook expressions for error propagation lead to incorrect estimates of the imprecision; but de Levie "does it right."

Chapter 3 continues with linear LS, but now involving fitting to functions more complex than a straight line and often involving three or more adjustable parameters. (Note that the "linear" in linear LS refers to the manner in which the adjustable parameters occur in the fit function, not to the shape of the function itself; some authors refer to this as "multilinear.") The coverage begins with fitting to polynomials and is later extended to orthogonal polynomials. Toward the end of the chapter, weighted LS is introduced; this is needed to deal with the problem of transforming nonlinear fit relationships into linear ones, like exponentials (log transformation) and hyperbolic relationships (reciprocal transformation). Most of the examples in this chapter are from analytical and physical chemistry and are often encountered in the chemical teaching literature. These include the analysis of diatomic spectroscopic data (I2 and HCl), the analytical problem of estimating species abundances from UV-visible spectra of mixtures, and the treatment of enzyme kinetics data.

Chapter 4 turns to nonlinear LS, in which iterative methods are needed to obtain the solutions to the minimization problem at the heart of LS. The tool for accomplishing this task in Excel is the Solver routine. Solver has one glaring limitation, namely the failure to provide the statistical errors in the adjustable parameters. De Levie has solved that problem with his own macro, SolverAid. The capabilities of these routines are illustrated on a number of examples, again mostly from the realm of analytical chemistry and spectroscopy. Among the more unusual examples are fits of titration data, of discontinuous functions, and of continuous functions taken piecewise. Toward the end are included some illustrations of the performance of Solver on some benchmark nonlinear fitting problems provided by NIST (National Institute for Science and Technology).

I have personally checked many of the examples illustrated in these three chapters using other methods, and I can vouch for their general validity. In a few cases there are errors, but many of these have been corrected by the author since the first printing of the book. Users should consult the publisher's web site for a listing of these.

In summary, this work will prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of Excel-oriented "number-crunchers." For those who prefer programs other than Excel, the examples can still provide useful instruction. For this group, the Excel material is of no use but also no real impediment. For those who hope to learn both data analysis and Excel at the same time, from "scratch," I doubt that this book will fill the bill: You'll probably need to start with more elementary treatises in both areas. I must admit that my aversion to the Excel program itself and its heavy focus in this book is what prevents me from giving the book the maximum rating.
