About the Author

Dr. Ian Barnes is Head of the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Derby, England. He studied at the Universities of Sussex, England; Stockholm, Sweden; and the London School of Economics (University of London). He has been a United States Information Agency Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has authored numerous articles on European history and has written The Historical Atlas of Asia, The Historical Atlas of Europe, The Historical Atlas of the American Revolution, and The Historical Atlas of the Bible.

Excellent reading text on the history of Native Americans

If you are looking for an excellent explanation of the history of Native Americans, this is an excellent choice. I read this text for my college history course and learned a great amount of information. I highly recommend this book.

Extremely comprehensive atlas of Native Americans. It is extremely technical and for my purposes I would have enjoyed a more user friendly publication. I found referencing different tribes somewhat difficult, especially minor ones.

About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

This book is excellent - it's very through

I have been programming for over 40 years (fortran and cobol) and only in my retirement have I started to learn OOP with JAVA. This book is excellent - it's very through. Reading the negative reviews I can relate to their pain - it's the same pain that I have seen in young engineers learning a complicated subject for the first time (thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and so on). It takes a while to develop the specific technical sophistication to comprehend the subject matter. Don't give up - it takes reading, and re-reading, and doing all the exercises (and spend the time to actually type in the examples (don't just download them)).

The phases involved in the creative process were first described by German physiologist Herman Helmholtz in the late nineteenth century. (Edwards, 1986, p. 3) He identified three stages of creativity: saturation, incubation and illumination. In the first decade of twentieth century, French mathematician Henri Poincaré identified a fourth step that follows the other three. Verification is putting a solution into concrete form and checking it for errors or usefulness. (shamelessly stolen from http://www.statpac.org/walonick/creativity.htm).

So remember - the first painful step in learning is having your brain saturated, then it has to sit there a while before the 'lightbulb comes on". Finally you have to put it into practice for your brain to 'close the loop.'

Again - this is the best JAVA book I have found that teaches without having to sit in classroom.

Thanks to Liang's creative ways to challenge us through programming problems such as moving a ball across a sine wave or creating a random-walk pattern, I've created many cool programs that no other study of programming had ever taught me. His programming challenges grasp your mind into the passion of puzzle solving and you'll be so addicted that you can't stop working on the problem until you've created something you can be proud of and thus increase your confidence as a programmer and excel to the top of your field.

Teaching the basics of programming is easy, but creating puzzles of programming to develop your skills as a computer scientist is hard - and Liang's book achieves that. I hope he creates more programming puzzles so I can code for days on end.

I was a student in numerous classes with Dr. Liang and have always kept up abreast of changes in the Java API by purchasing Dr. Liang's books. He is a great teacher and really knows and keeps up with the latest. Add this one to your collection as a great resource. Dr. Liang has really made significant improvements in the style, format and readability of the book and as always, has great examples and numerous supplemental resources to go deeper into any specific topic.

This was such a joy to find! When my child lost the first tooth I looked every where for this book but couldn't find it. Within the past two weeks I found it here. Once the book arrived I read it to my child & my husband. Both loved it as much as I do. If you can get a copy of this hard to find book I would encourage you to do so. You won't be sad as you explain to your little one where their teeth go once the tooth fairy picks it up.

I bought this lovely book for my grandson after he lost his first tooth, but haven't given it to him yet at the request of his parents. Little Rabbit is pretty self-aware for someone so young. She is not sure if she is going to buy into the Tooth Fairy story. So if you want a child to absolutely believe in the Tooth Fairy, no questions asked, please keep in mind that the book can be "thought provoking."

Wonderful book that allows your child to think above and beyond the narrowness of traditional tooth fairy storytelling.

Our copy is an original one (absolutely charming drawings which I wish they'd kept in the newer edition) and it is my three-year-old daughter's favorite book even though she is nowhere near losing a tooth anytime soon.

I love this book because the author doesn't want to lead the child in any one direction. Rather, she wants the child to think for him/herself whether they believe in the tooth fairy or not... and what to do with the tooth.

Baby rabbit has a few ideas for what the tooth fairy does with her tooth. She thinks up three scenarios (all of which my daughter thinks are "silly"):

1) "'I think she will save my tooth and give it to a baby rabbit that was just born, and that's how little baby rabbits get their teeth. Do you think that, Daddy?'"

2) "'Or,' said Little Rabbit, 'I think she will put my tooth up in the sky because it is such a shiny tooth, and that's how starts get made. Do you think that, Daddy?'"

3)"'Really,' said Little Rabbit, 'I think she says a magic spell and she turns the tooth into a penny...'"

Ultimately, Little Rabbit asks her mother to "sneak" something under her pillow in case the tooth fairy doesn't - but not to tell her whether she did or not.

The next morning Little Rabbit wakes up and...

I absolutely love this book; it will be one of the very few books that I'll keep for my daughter. And by the way, my daughter's belief in the tooth fairy is not diminished in the slightest.

About the Author
Margaret Richek, a specialist in vocabulary development, received her Ph.D. in education in 1974 from the University of Chicago. For many years, she served on the faculty of Northeastern Illinois University, teaching developmental reading courses to college students. She has published articles and presented across the United States on strategies for vocabulary learning, and is the author of VOCABULARY FORACHIEVEMENT, a series of textbooks for grades 3 through 12. Currently, she is Professor Emerita of Northeastern Illinois University and serves as a consultant for Roosevelt University in Chicago and the Bureau of Education and Research.

Worthwhile if you're not too busy.

Interesting book, and I don't regret reading it, but . . . poorly written and excessively wordy. At times it gets very dull; I skimmed a LOT. Toward the end, the weirdness factor increased by, oh, a hundred or so. By that time I definitely was NOT buying it. Still, interesting, and I think there are some good things here worth knowing.

Unleash the Leader in YOU!

As the tile indicates, this is a book on leadership development - "the hows: how people become leaders, how they lead, and how organizations encourage or stifle potential leaders." The premise upon which this book is based is best put by Warren himself - "...leaders are people who are able to express themselves fully. By this I mean that they know who they are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and how to fully deploy their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses. They also know what they want, why they want it, and how to communicate what they want to others, in order to gain their cooperation and support. Finally, they know how to achieve their goals. The key to full self-expression is understanding one's self and the world, and the key to understanding is learning - from one's own life and experience."

The book then goes on to further elaborate on each of the areas highlighted above. The key differentiator between this and other leadership books is that this one promotes unleashing leadership from within, rather than describe what a person should strive to be. To me, this is the only way to develop sustainable authentic leaders. Another area of focus is that of experience. Warren stresses the importance of experience as the primary and ultimate development vehicle for leaders. Education is all its forms is important - but does not substitute the need for experience whether successes or failures. The book brings to life all of the aspects discussed through the stories of many successful leaders from a variety of sectors.

A must read in the area of leadership and personal development!

Below are some excerpts I found particularly insightful:

1- "Becoming a leader isn't easy, just as becoming a doctor or a poet isn't easy, and anyone who claims otherwise is fooling himself. But learning to lead is a lot easier than most of us think it is, because each of us contains the capacity for leadership. In fact, almost every one of us can point to some leadership experience."

2- "There are three basic reasons why leaders are important. First, they are responsible for the effectiveness of organizations...Second, the change and upheaval of the past years has left us with no place to hide...Third, there is a pervasive, national concern about the integrity of our institutions."

3- "There are four steps in the process behind Norman Lear's success in mastering the context: (1) becoming self-expressive; (2) listening to the inner voice; (3) learning from the right mentors; and (4) giving oneself over to a guiding vision."

4- "If most of us like Ed, are creatures of our context, prisoners of the habits, practices, and rules that make us ineffectual, it is from the Norman Lears, the people who not only challenge and conquer the context but who change it in fundamental ways, that we must learn. The first step toward change is to refuse to be deployed by others and to choose to deploy yourself. Thus the process begins."

5- "Leaders come in every size, shape, and disposition...Nevertheless, they all seem to share some, if not all, of the following ingredients: The first basic ingredient of leadership is a guiding vision...the second basic ingredient of leadership is passion...The next basic ingredient of leadership is integrity...Two more basic ingredients of leadership are curiosity and daring."

6- "All the leaders I talked with agreed that no one can teach you how to become yourself, to take charge, to express yourself, except you. But there are some things that others have done that are useful to think about in the process. I've organized them as the four lessons of self-knowledge. They are -One: You are your own best teacher. - Two: Accept responsibility. Blame no one. - Three: You can learn anything you want to learn. - Four: True understanding comes from reflecting on your experience."

7- "Self-awareness= self-knowledge = self-possession = self-control = self-expression. You make your life your own by understanding it."

8- "So innovative learning must replace maintenance/shock learning. The principle components of innovative learning are: -Anticipation: being active and imaginative rather than passive and habitual - Learning by listening to others - Participation: shaping events, rather than being shaped by them"

9- "Leaders, then, learn from their experiences. Learning from experience means - looking back at your childhood and adolescence and using what happened to you then to enable you to make things happen now, so that you become the master of your own life rather than its servant. - consciously seeking the kings of experiences in the present that will improve and enlarge you. - taking risks as a matter of course, with the knowledge that failure is as vital as it is inevitable. - Seeing the future - yours and the world's - as an opportunity to do al those things you have not done and those things that need to be done, rather than as a trial or a test."

10- "No leader sets out to be a leader. People set out to live their lives, expressing themselves fully. When that expression is of value, they become leaders."

11- "...Having measured the differences between what you want and what you're able to do, and between what drives you and what satisfies you, and between what your values are and what the organization's values are - are you able and willing to overcome those differences?"

12- "Entrepreneur Larry Wilson defined the difference between desire and drive as the difference between expressing yourself and providing yourself."

13- "The means of expression are the steps to the leadership: 1- Reflection leading to resolution 2- Resolution leading to perspective 3- Perspective leading to point of view 4- Point of view leading to test and measures 5- Tests and measures leading to desire 6- Desire lending to mastery 7- Mastery leading to strategic thinking 8- Strategic thinking leading to full self-expression 9- The synthesis of full self-expression = leadership"

14- "There is magic in experience, as well as wisdom. And more magic in stress, challenge, and adversity, and more wisdom. And the letters JOB after one's name mean infinitely more to the wise than all rhe BAS, MBAS, and PHDS."

15- "There are four ingredients leaders have to generate and sustain trust: 1- Constancy. 2- Congruity. 3- Reliability. 4- Integrity."

16- "...When they asked top executives what advice they would give to younger executives, there were three basic themes: 1- Take advantage of every opportunity. 2- Aggressively search for meaning. 3- Know yourself."

Wandering without focus

I chose this book based on my reading of The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership by Steve Sample (a great book). Unfortunately, I could barely make it through this book. The few phrases of inspiration needed to be mined from pages of unorganized and misplaced vignettes about "leaders". Mr. Bennis begins with a sound set of leadership attributes, but loses focus along the way by adding more and more of what I would call "bullet points of leadership". I think he needs a good editor to help find a focus and stick with it. It is too bad, I think there is some good stuff in there. Good luck finding it.

Helpful, but a little long winded, dated and preachy

Like most business books you really only need to read an outline or a list of the maxims to get the point.

Especially the beginning where the author tediously paints a bleak picture of the moral state of the U.S. ostensibly to convince the reader of the leadership vacuum of the current time.

Also, the author simplistically proclaims certain historical figures leaders and other not. For example, he calls JFK a leader, and Clinton not. The difference being Clinton's moral failings. This seems to ignore JFK's record of philandering and opioid dependence.

Using phrases like "new economy" makes the book sounded dated at times.

That aside, I think there are some gems for the patient reader or those who can skim effectively.
