Acceptable condition but pricey

The book arrived in acceptable condition but was at a higher price point than the other books purchased from other vendors. The other books were part of the same collection, 12 in all. The binding is in tact but the cover with use will fall off unless taped up for support. All of the pages are in tact and the primary damage is to the front cover with minor corner crumpling on the page corners. Acceptable condition. The delivery from this retailer was much slower than the other 12 books ordered from various vendors on the same day. Plus, the book was not in protective packaging, only tightly secured packaging. Not sure if this was sent via media mail, there was no tracking.

An astonishing achievement!!!

This is, without question, Breisach's magnum opus. From Herodotus to Hegel, and from Bancroft to Collingwood, Breisach offers the student of history a cogent history of historiography. While it is probably best suited for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, it should be required reading for "history buffs", History Channel producers, and David McCullough.

The only way Breisach could have made this work better, is by dividing the three eras (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern) into three volumes. As it is, major figures such as Michael Oakeshott get no more than a brief mention on one page.

For Graduate Students Only?

I used this book when taking a post-graduate historiography course. Clearly not for novices or history "buffs," the book proved an excellent source for graduate students seeking some understanding of the fundamental beliefs associated with historians and how they interpreted history through various "schools" of thought. As such, it was very helpful for explaining the philosophical underpinnings behind various works. I recommend that history students use the book that way. For example, when reading Thomas B. Macaulay's "History of England" as an example of Whigish History, Breisach's interpretation of the Whig approach came in handy. His portions on Vico, and later the Annales Group or School, also proved very helpful. He certainly spent more time on European approaches although he paid some attention to American ideas. Those looking for deeper American philosophical interpretations should examine Eric Foner's "The New American History" and Peter Novick's "That Noble Dream." Breisach's book makes a great desk reference for its cross-referenced index.

The Historiography Bible

I used this book as part of an undergrad historiography course. It contains literally everything you would ever need to know.

The writing is very dry, but what do you expect from a textbook?

What else can be said?

There is a new edition coming out soon. The professor who taught the course I took has changed texts to one that's not so imposing and having looked at it and it's a poor substitute. This book is the ultimate power in Historiography.

About the Author
Catharyn A. Baird is Professor of Business at Regis University, Denver, Colorado, and the President/CEO of CB Resources, LLC, the parent company of CB Presents. Her interest in ethics was piqued while teaching business professionals struggling to do the right thing within their complex business environments. Pursuing that interest at Regis, she developed a unique approach to resolving ethical dilemmas which sparked the development of The GG Ethics Game, an interactive web-based ethics simulation and provided the framework for teaching her students in the university's business and health care programs. Insights gained from business professional and students enriched the content of this book. Over the years Baird has also conducted workshops in a variety of environments. This has given her the opportunity to walk the talk; and experience the challeges of creating ethical environments while honoring the individuality and gifts of the participants. After graduating from law school, Baird practiced law for ten years before joining the faculty at Regis University. From 1987-1995 she also was in-house counsel for the Colorado Secretary of State, specializing in election law. Over the course of her tenure, she has held a variety of administrative positions at Regis. In 2000 she was named Regis University Faculty Member of the year. In addition, she has a national reputation as a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator on issues of ethics, justice, and spirituality in the workplace.

what a rip off

I received my book that was ordered as "new", when I got it the code had been scratched off and used. I contacted the seller, who didn't get back to me for two days. They said the information said the code was used - if the code was used then the book isn't new as it was labeled. The seller wouldn't get back to me afterwards and would not let me return the book without a restocking fee. I had to re-order my book from another seller. I would not recommend this seller to anyone.

N. H. CHAN is Choh-Ming Li Chair Professor of Statistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Associate Editor of six journals. Dr. Chan is also the author of Time Series: Applications to Finance with R and S-Plus, Second Edition, published by Wiley.

H. Y. WONG is Associate Professor in the Risk Management Science Program of the Department of Statistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His areas of interest include data analysis, statistical computing, risk management, and stochastic calculus.

Froude visited the West Indies five decades after the abolition of slavery determined to find dullness, decay, and racial inferiority. His prejudgments were satisfied in every way. West Indian blacks were inferior to "the Zulus and Caffres" he had previously encountered in South Africa. Haitians undoubtedly practiced cannibalism, determined on the basis of two two-hour visits to that island. Slavery must have been a good thing, since it taught the blacks of Jamaica politeness. Bears should be introduced into the Blue Mountains of Jamaica to vary the fauna, and it would be no great loss if they should eat a black child from time to time. Not surprisingly, the very first black child he encountered, on the voyage out, resembled a monkey in the zoo. The African-descended people of the British colonies of the Caribbean could not ever govern themselves, even though the Chief Justice of Barbados, whom he met, was one of those people, and clearly, even to his prejudiced eyes, competent.
