♥ Merry Christmas ♥

First off this book is gorgeous! I had to get the UK Edition and I love it so much!

1. Midnights ~ Rainbow Rowell ~ 5/5

I wasn't sure I would like this story as it only takes place on New Years Eve from 2011 - 2014. Mags first met Noel on New Year's Eve 2011 where she saved him an allergic reaction from not eating snacks with nuts in them. And they became best friends. But every New's Years Eve from there on she wants to be the one to kiss Noel but he's always kissing another girl.... until 2014 - her dream finally came true. There are more revelations and I'm not going to say what led up to anything, but this story was so good. I just loved it. I loved both of the characters and their chemistry together! And this wasn't even a long story as opposed to some of the other ones.

2. The Lady and the Fox ~ Kelly Link ~ 3/5

This story was a bit bizarre but I still give it three stars. Every year for a bit of time when it snows, Miranda meets this boy named Fenny in the gardens. He only has until the snow stops falling to be with her. He is apparently trapped by some snow witch or something. And no, they don't really explain why he is trapped. Needless to say Miranda saves him and I guess they have a happily ever after.

3. Angels In The Snow ~ Matte de la pena ~ 5/5

This is a sweet story about a boy named Shy who is watching his bosses apartment for Christmas. Well, rather he's watching the cat. But this boss didn't give him any money before he left and there is no food but maybe a few yogurts and random small things. Shy is starving but he won't try to go out and get help.

Haley is a girl in another apartment that needs to use his shower. They become friends but he doesn't tell her he's starving. I mean I wanted to smack him several times. But I digress. Haley finds out on her own that he has no food and she starts packing it on. She makes him all kinds of food and they form as sweet little romance.

4. Polaris Is Where You'll Find Me ~ Jenny Han - 4/5

This one is cute because Natty is a human that lives at the North Pole with Santa and the Elves. But when she went on a Christmas run with Santa one year she meets a little human boy. She has thought about him ever since and now that she is older she wants to find him. Especially since humans and elves can't be together and the crush she has on Flynn the elf isn't going to work out. I thought the ending was sweet and cute.

5. It's A Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown ~ Stephanie Perkins ~ 5/5

This is a wonderful story about Marigold and North. Marigold wants to use North's voice on her Youtube channel. She does animations and that's what she wants to do for a living with one of the big companies.

North works for his parents tree farm and he's always outside her window selling trees. She doesn't have the money to get a tree but she wants to try to get one so she can talk to him. She asks for a Charlie Brown tree, it's so sweet ♥

North ends up taking the tree to her apartment and then helps her clear a space since there is so much clutter. This ends up taking so many hours and they talk and talk. Marigold finally admits her scheme and other nice things happen. That's all I'm saying ♥

This one was okay. You have Vaughn who is the town prankster.

I was the guy who taught other kids how to egg houses, roll yards, and glue mailboxes shut. And the older I got, the more elaborate my pranks became. In middle school, I filled the clinic with Styrofoam peanuts. Last year, my junior year of high school, I decorated the town Christmas tree with neon thong underwear.

But one of his little pranks turns bad and he ends up catching the Church on fire. So he's in trouble for all of that and helping to fix it back up and work on the pageant. He starts talking to Gracie Robinson and they seem to click and she finds out he's not such a bad guy after all.

10. Welcome To Christmas, Ca ~ Kiersten White ~ 5/5

Maria lives in this small town and works at the diner for her mother and her mother's boyfriend Rick. Maria hates it and wants to get out of town as soon as she can. She's not sure how since she can't afford college and she can't afford much of anything else.

Then when they replace the old cook that passed with the new cook Ben... things become sort of magical. Ben has a way of know what to feed people no matter what they order and it's awesome. They find a little magic together as well and the ending is sweet with Maria's dreams coming true. Even dreams she didn't know she had.

Lovely for Yourself or A Gift

This year has been the year of story collections for me. I have read quite a few of them this year and My True Love Gave to Me might top the list. It is at least tied with The Curiosities. This set of twelve stories was raved about last year and I think it deserved all that praise. There is something for everyone in this collection if you enjoy cute contemporary romance stories. Some stories are very holiday related while others just happen around the holidays. Personally I loved Midnights, The Lady and the Fox (fantastic!), It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown (OMG this one!!), and The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer.

Like all collections these stories really stood out to me while others weren’t for me. Overall though all the stories gave me the warm fuzzies and made me really happy. This book came along at the right time for me. I needed some feel-good stories because of some stuff going on in my personal life. This book gave me a boost right around the holidays and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book especially around the holidays!

Overall an okay holiday book

My favorites were "Midnight", "It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown", "Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus" and "Welcome to Christmas, CA"!

A short summary of my thoughts right after reading each of the stories:

"Midnights" by Rainbow Rowell | 4/5
I really enjoyed this story, it was so cute. Great start to the book.

"The Lady and the Fox" by Kelly Link | 3/5
This was a great fantasy story, I did miss some more information about the characters though.

"Angels in the Snow" by Matt de la Peña | 4/5
I was happy to find a NA story in there! Very enjoyable read :)

"Polaris is Where You'll Find Me" by Jenny Han | 2/5
This was so short and not very good! Reminded me too much if the movie Elf, but not in a good way.

"It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown" by Stephanie Perkins | 5/5
I loved this one. There is just something about Perkins' writing! The story felt complete, and I really liked reading about North and Marigold.

Annoying but useful

I gave this book a four because the advise in the book is very sound. Following the guidelines resulted in me reducing bodily pains and regaining strength what felt like immediately. However, i had to remove a star because this books is overly long and repetitive. The entire book could have easily been reduced down to about twenty pages and five chapters and it probably should have been. However, if you have some hip or shoulder pain and need some convincing that the technique works then buy this book. However, if you don't need constant convincing that the protocol works buy his book Press Reset, it's the exact same information for less money with less words.

It's Easier Than You Think

We're told that we're facing an obesity epidemic in this country. We move too little and eat too much. Some people heed the message and put in hours of mindless cardio that make them skinny, weak, and stiff. It's still better than nothing.

Others jump in with both feet and follow the latest fad of intense exercise. The fad's marketing doesn't mention the injuries or burnout that waits around the corner. The large majority do nothing at all and the country gets weaker and sicker.

"Original Strength", by Tim Anderson and Geoff Neupert provide another option. The authors want us to reconnect with our God-given gifts of movement and natural strength. They acknowledge that we have to get older but they want you to know that we don't have to age and decay. I have Tim Anderson's two other books, "Becoming Bulletproof" and "Pressing Reset." This latest book builds on the other two.

The prescription is simple. Learn to rock, roll, nod, crawl, and cross crawl. You then reset your body with these movements in as little as 10 minutes a day. They contend that this all most of our current sedentary population would need to recapture their strength and mobility. The book also shows you how to incorporate these movements into a weight training program. It's called a "reset" or a "preset" (depending on when you do it.

I have added this program to my own routine. I've done this for a couple of reasons. At 55 yrs. of age, I've got a lot of mileage on my body from life and exercise. I've practiced law, started schools, and I currently run a fitness training studio for women (Brownstone Fitness).

My days start at 5 AM and end at midnight. I can't afford to be stiff and tight. Our physiology reflects our internal state and I have to be "on" for the clients and my family. Tim and Geoff's methods help me do that. I have also brought the program into the warmups and travel routines of the women I work with.

The six-pack and muscular arms are nice but teaching people to regain the movement and grace that God intended is a more important part of my mission. "Original Strength" is a critical and foundational tool in my toolbox. Well, it's time for a reset warmup, some kettlebell cleans and squats and some spiderman crawling. Tomorrow I'll reset and do The Sulaxmi Exercise Method. If you run, lift weights, do yoga, or have no program, pick up the book and start to look, feel, and perform better.

Meant to Move

You learn to move as an infant. No one can teach you these skills as you earn them over the course of several years through trial and error. Now you head off to school where you are told to sit & be quiet. As a former teacher, I can appreciate this, but like most adults with movement issues, I now also cringe. All the time and effort spent learning to move are for naught as you spend most of your life in a chair.
You can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on gym memberships getting stronger and fitter. If you are fortunate to have access to a trainer that understands how movement issues relate to health and fitness, you'll be light-years ahead of the norm. However, for just a few dollars, you can regain all of this in just a few minutes per day. Best of all, it's EZ-PZ.
The cover picture on the book captures the essence of this process. You can learn a lot just by taking the time to watch the world through a child's eyes.
Everyone of any age should buy this book.

Practical Advice for Christian Conduct

Like many Orthodox works which are translated, this book contains a brief biography on the author in it. I always find biographies both interesting and useful as they help serve as a good framework for the book. With these few pages, the reader learns not only about the author but also the audience to whom the work was written and the culture of the time. By knowing these facts, one can read the book in the proper light.

Looking at the cover and the title, one would get the impression that this book is written for religious and monastics. Each chapter in the table of contents deals with proper conduct for a Christian. I own and have read books of this nature before. Once you start getting into the heart of the book, you quickly realize that this book was written for religious or monastics but the layperson could find some value in the work. Not so for this book! Metropolitan Gregory specifically addresses husbands and wives in this book, so I was pleasantly surprised that this book was written with the laity in mind.

In addition to an explanation on how to conduct ourselves at different moments of the day (morning, afternoon, evening, etc.), the reader is also given instruction on how to conduct themselves in the common situtations of everyday life as well as in relation to God and others. I especially liked the short three page chapter on "How Should We Conduct Ourselves During Sleeplessness at Night?" I don't know about the rest of y'all, but it is an effort for me to fall asleep most nights. Prayer is of course the answer, but more specifically, we should pray for the salvation and repentance of all. It certainly beats watching the clock and stressing each hour I lose to sleeplessness.

I loved this little gem of a book, and it easily gets a 5 star rating from me. This is a book you can pick up and read through it once just to get an overall general idea on Christian conduct. However, if you want to make this book really useful in your life, you can carry it around with you and reference it when in particular situations and you need guidance. The size of this book makes the latter a viable option.

Practical, timeless advice

Although written in the mid-19th century, the advice and prescriptions remain as practical and relevant for today as ever. Be grateful and say thank you for a new day, immediately upon awakening, get up and get dressed immediately, etc. Why we shouldn't lounge in a warm bed too long in the morning and how getting up quickly is much better for our spiritual health. The concept of the book is sound--here's how to think and behave in a holy way for just one day, from sunrise to sunset, when you have relationship problems, when you are about to start some new task, how to eat, how to turn in for the night, and even what to do if you wake up and can't fall back to sleep. Now simply repeat. Great ideas.

A small gem of a book.

When I picked up this book I was skeptical as to what advice and guidance a priest who lived in a different era and in a different environment from my own could give me. To my surprise, Metropolitan Gregory's wisdom proved as relevant today and to me (at least) as it must have been to the everyday peope he was addressing in St. Petersburg long ago. Father Gregory displays a keen insight into human nature and all its foibles and lovingly offers down-to-earth, concrete instructions on how to combat those weaknesses and live a holy life.

Good specific info on paph species

This book is just what I was looking for. It describes the native environment (locale, elevation, sunlight, preferred habitats, etc) for dozens of paph species. It also gives detailed information on the seasonal variations in temp, humidity, sunlight, etc each would encounter in the wild. I've found this to be a valuable resource when one of my paphs doesn't bloom for me and I want to fine tune the culture.

I had seen the publication at one of the orchid societies that I attend, so I was somewhat familiar with contents and layout of the book. I wanted my own copy as a future reference item in my own library. The publication lives up to expectations.
