About the Author
Randall B. Lindsey is emeritus professor at California State University, Los Angeles and has a practice centered on educational consulting and issues related to equity and access. Prior to higher education faculty roles, he served as a junior and senior high school history teacher, a district office administrator for school desegregation, and executive director of a non-profit corporation. All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.
Kikanza Nuri-Robins helps people to close the gap between what they say they are and what they actually do. Whether she is in a corporate boardroom, the fireside room of a retreat center, or a convention center auditorium, Kikanza uses her skills and insights to help people and organizations that are in transition – or ought to be. She shares her observations and recommendations with clarity and candor, while gently encouraging them to face the difficult situations that challenge their skill sets and their values. Kikanza studied at Occidental College, the University of Southern California, and the San Francisco Theological Seminary. Kikanza lives in Los Angeles where she spends her discretionary time as a textile artist.
Raymond D. Terrell, EdD, served as special assistant to the dean for diversity initiatives in the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. A former secondary English teacher, elementary school principal, professor of educational administration, and dean of the School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles, he has more than 40 years of professional experience with diversity and equity issues.

Let's just make some stuff up and sell it...

This book attempts to cover a serious topic but fails. Rwanda, Kosovo, and 911, are just several reminders of what unchecked cultural conflict can produce. Children in our schools will be killed because of intolerance to their race or sexual orientation and millions harbor lifelong emotional wounds. If you are looking for a book that takes a scholarly approach to this issue, look elsewhere.
The authors of Cultural Proficiency appear to written about whatever came off the top if their collective heads and took far to much liberty in just making stuff up that suits their position (even if it is one that I typically agree with). For a book that purports to be scholarly, not a single empirical study supports the authors position. No evidence is provided that any of the suggestions they offer have validity. Even after three editions, not a single piece of empirical evidence documents that anything in these pages actually works. While the authors do make a number of critical points, so does the UFO community. Without evidence, it's just one person's belief over another's. Our history is paved with horribly hurtful actions done with the best of intentions. We just never bothered to check to see if they worked and neither have Lindsey, Nuri Roberts, and Terrell.
If your going to claim to have the solution to something as important as cultural intolerance, you better be right. We don't have the time, money, or political capitol to do this twice. The old saying of "measure twice, cut once" is extremely applicable. I'm not seeing these authors measuring even once. This feels a bit like academic televangelism. For only $38.63 you too can be healed from the demons of cultural intolerance!
Even if the prescriptions of the book are suspect, you would think a title such as this should at least have solid definitions and historical support for the need for cultural proficiency. Here again, the authors have failed. These definitions provided are not definitions, they are connotative expressions at best. A definition is an exact meaning of word. Words may have multiple definitions under the denotation, but each sub-definition is precise. What we have here are broad generalizations. These could be called colloquialisms or even might even be stretched to be cultural proficiency jargon, but they are by no means definitions. The authors are bound up in the connotation and denotation problem and someone needs to toss in a life preserver and pull them out.
Finally, one must question the validity of cultural proficiency in the 21st century. The authors provide a timeline on pages 8 - 11. Each decade is listed:
1950's Desegregation
1960's Integration
1970's Multiculturalism
1980's Diversity
1990s and 21st Century - Cultural Proficiency.
I do agree that the 90's were about Cultural Proficiency. But the 21st century is something else. For lack of a better word, I'll describe it describe it as Cultural Transmogrification. Transmogrification is the changing of something into something else. The 00's were a time of great cultural morphing around the world, fueled in no small part by the Internet. It's by no means complete, but it is absolutely something under way. Globalization has led to a worldwide exchange of worldviews, products, ideas and cultures. The best Indian food is in England. Tuscany has some killer Chinese food. My local WalMart carries six varieties of Hummus. Every city in the world must by now have a Donor Kebab stand and Gelato shop (likely under the same roof). Yes, there are still marked and pronounced cultural differences, but they are changing quickly, morphing into one. Each generation moves closer to the middle. On the macro scale, we are becoming one global culture faster than the authors of Cultural Proficiency could have ever imagined in 1990. I'm not saying that Cultural Proficiency never exited, but in 2013, to just look for Cultural Proficiency will not be enough. Not for us as global educators and not to prepare our students for the global world they will work in. Cultural Proficiency is dead, long live Cultural Proficiency. As for Cultural Proficiency: A Manual for School Leaders, the world won't be for loss without it and neither will you.

I was disappointed in this book

I was disappointed in this book. I have taken a lot of social justice trainings and workshops to help with the racial achievement gap, so am very familiar with social justice/equity work. This book is not a useful framework, in my opinion, and I believe it actually perpetuates the biases of the dominate group rather than works to alleviate them.
There was some good historical information in a few chapters, but it only touched the surface of that and many different issues. I was also disappointed that there wasn't a lot of research cited, and overall it felt very subjective. This book has too broad of a scope, it is confusing in some parts (even to me, who has had over 7 years of training), and is not a practical way to work on racism. Don't buy this book, or any with "cultural proficiency" in the title. That is now my opinion, at least.

A political axe to grind! Educational leaders and instructors be wary.

I thought this book was written as a text book on cultural diversity? Although at times I appreciated the perspectives presented, as a member of a First Nation tribe. I found the book to more accurately articulate the radical or leftist position and not really the experience of the average minority. I asked several friends and colleagues about certain passages from the book and the majority agreed with me, a few agreed with the authors. The book although useful in many chapters is also a diatribe against western civilization. It is in no way a balanced approach but takes an antagonistic almost moral stance against against the evils of The dominant European culture. Taken in totality, I might recommend the book for political reading, however feel in very inappropriate for the typical classroom dealing with diversity issues. I feel as a minority it is also important to be understanding of other groups and not simply attempt to assault the majority and present them in a negative light. I found the book very one sided and and in failing to present both sides, not a useful book. I would not recommend this for a school leader who wishes to lead, care for and work with all people in a fair and honest way.
