Beloved: Henri Nouwen in Conversation, by Henri J. M. Nouwen, Philip Roderick

In this rare, previously unpublished interview Henri Nouwen, one of the most deeply loved spiritual teachers of recent times, reflects on themes that were central to his life and thought.

Beloved records -- in both spoken and written form -- a treasured conversation that took place in the summer of 1992 at a retreat center in England. The CD enables one to listen to Nouwen's distinctive voice as he speaks about such things as transforming our loneliness, escaping the tyranny of busyness, and choosing to live in ways that, moment by moment, remind us of who we are -- the beloved of God.

The book shows this conversation to be studded with gems of spiritual wisdom that merit slow, contemplative reading. Including questions for reflection or discussion, Beloved is perfect for individual or group retreats or for personal listening and reading. Here is a depth of wisdom to turn to again and again.

Nouwen is amazing
By Raymond L. Snow
In an age when there are so many trite, shallow Christian writers, it is so refreshing to spend time with Henri Nouwen discussing with him the point of life and how the struggle with suffering. This book is so wonderful because it contains a CD of Nouwen speaking. It's the best!

Useful, Seriously Helpful if you give it Careful Attention. The vocal DVD enlivens and focuses the messages (for me).

This transcription of an interview/conversation with Henri Nouwen comes in a high-quality, attractive little book of only 51 pages accompanied by a DVD recording of the conversation. The book jacket features an excellent photo of a lovable-looking Henri in bulky sweater and muffler-scarf.

I first read the interview and later listened to the DVD conversation. It’s probably best to do both several times to best appreciate the richness of what’s being said, and then to work with the material as it pertains to your own life. The DVD really brings greater meaningfulness and clarity of understanding, but I felt glad to have the written transcript for further reference and re-reading. Henri Nouwen’s speech is accented, I guess because of his birth and early life in Holland, and there is a slow and then fast pattern to his talk. The words in the fast parts can be difficult to pick up. But, I have to say that listening to him caused his message to really come alive for me and I loved what he was saying. Not that he sounds like a sweety-pie. Actually, he sounds like a totally serious, spiritual man who strongly insists upon a need for discipline in any living of a deeply spiritual life.

The interviewer, Philip, begins by pointing out that people in a busy world have difficulty coming to terms with solitude and silence. He asks if these are important, why are they so important. Henri starts out by stating that solitude has something to do with being alone, which everybody in some deep sense always is, but there is also the negative matter of “loneliness.” He explains that aloneness and loneliness can be converted into “solitude,” which is the positive way of dealing with your aloneness and which will save you from destroying your own life and others’ lives through various negative ways of trying to find satisfaction. This is essentially an identity struggle in which persons fail to find fulfillment because they do not recognize themselves as the “beloved” of God. Henri says that “You are created by a God who wants all your attention and who wants to give you all the love you need.” If one listens to the voice of the one who calls us to communion with Him, this is not the voice of the senses: The “mystical life” is beyond feelings and thoughts—and this aspect is a difficult thing for most people.

God will also give you your vocation in solitude if you really want it. (Which vocation may be a small and simple thing or things to do.)

The interviewer asks how people can find the illusive sense of being the Beloved of God. Should one just go around saying to oneself, “I am the Beloved of God”? Nouen says, No, that we must claim our belovedness. This will involve some inner discipline regarding what we do with our time. For instance, what kind of books do we read and what kind of TV programs and movies do we watch? He says, we should ask “Do I have a big garbage can in my head?” Or do I choose to say, “I am the beloved, and I’m not going to listen to that stuff, not going to watch it”? There is also discipline to be applied regarding relationships. “Do I go to someone who speaks to me about Jesus or about helping?” He emphasizes the fact that life requires us to make constant choices every second about the tools we will use for our belovedness. How can I hold to my belovedness when the whole world is telling me that I’m not beloved? Henri feels that people need healthy and normal kinds of touching and warmth. There’s also an enormous need for affirmation, for people to say, “What you said was really good and it really helped me,” or “I have been thinking about you and I’ve been praying for you.” We need to give and receive these kinds of affirmative messages. He says “The Christian community is people who remind one another who they truly are—the beloved of God,” while everything else around us is probably making us think this is not true. But, you always do have to fight for your identity as beloved. You have to take tiny steps and make choices every day. “The challenge is to choose” and to know that you have a choice.

The above roughly summarizes some points in the first 4 sections of the book covering about 20 pages. (But throughout the book there are dozens of bits of advice and insights that Henri touches upon.) He goes on to enlarge upon the “Heart,” and “Prayer.” Contrary to what most evangelical activists judge against, the going inward into prayer life, silence, and solitude is NOT turning one’s back on the world and the people who are in need of ministry. It is at the center of things—at the HEART of life and love, in prayer with the Lord—that one is in touch with all the world, all creation. There, one is as if at the Central Hub of a big wheel, not in some specific spot among many spots on the periphery of a wheel. Living in solidarity with God is living in Solidarity with people. While solitude and silence are essential for life, so is community. There are millions of ways of realizing both solitude and community, says Henri. It is “not all getting up at five in the morning and sitting in front of my icon for an hour.” Most people are not called to that, but they are called to solitude in the midst of their lives.

In sections 7 through 14, each section being only about 2 or 3 pages long, Henri talks about Silence; Light in the Darkness; Hope; Choosing Life (and actually, in a way, I think the entire message is about this Choice which we can make in everything that we do); Worship; Desiring God and Resisting God; Living Larger; and Prayer in Action.

Then follows a section entitled Questions and Invitations for Reflection, with one or two questions pertaining to each of the 14 Sections of the Conversation. For instance, for the section entitled “Vocation,” the two questions are: “When do you choose to live from a place where you know you feel rejected? When do you choose to live from the place where you know you are the beloved of God?” The suggestion for “The Heart” section is: “Explore and journal how, when you enter into your heart, the center of your being, you meet not only God, but the whole world there.” For the “Hope” section, the suggestion is” “For a week or longer, highlight ways and times in which you choose not so much to be a victim, but more to be a person of faith and hope.” For the “Worship” section, the suggestion is: “Experiment with your capacity to allow grace to change and open your heart, even in the midst of chaos, to give out thanks. Find the interior place where you can practice gratitude to God as Source, both for those who love and those who wound, knowing that often they will be the same person or group.” These are a sample of the helpful suggestions for beginning good habits for your discipline of making positive choices. So it is a very helpful book and interview. It can be a workbook.

One thing that Henri points out is that words are necessary to talk about these matters (as in this conversation), but once one understands them more deeply and completely, words fall away and become unnecessary.

Since the book, though small, is attractive and useful, it would be a super-nice gift to yourself---useful over and over again for months and maybe years to come—or to another person. It addresses itself well to elderly people who are struggling with loneliness and also to busy, active people who complain that they cannot carve out enough time for solitude or prayer.
